Donna Leon is an American author famous for her popular series of crime novels set in Venice, featuring the beloved Commissario Guido Brunetti, known for rich local color and social commentary. Born in New Jersey, she lived in Venice for decades, teaching and later writing, but avoids publication in Italian to remain a local, not a celebrity. Her books have been translated widely, adapted into a German TV series, and explore themes like corruption, environment, and culture through Brunetti's investigations.
